Why "the village maven?"
We have all heard the saying, "it takes a village to raise a child ." This idea really resonated with me when I was getting ready to have my children, far away from my family and good friends who were spread all over the country and the world. I started thinking about what kind of community and support I would need to find in order to have a "village" around me to help me raise a new family. That "village" would need to be filled with knowledgeable, understanding women who had experienced birthing and raising children and could share their wisdom. In building my own "village," I wanted to create a sacred community for other mothers around me by supporting them and their families. Most of us no longer live in small village communities, but still need to be embraced and empowered during our childbearing period in order to develop the skills and confidence to raise our children.
A maven is a trusted expert in a particular field, who seeks to pass knowledge on to others. The word maven comes from Hebrew, via Yiddish, and means one who understands, based on an accumulation of knowledge. Throughout the last several years I have accumulated a wealth of knowledge surrounding pregnancy, childbirth and the post partum period. I have given birth to two children and gone through a myriad of situations that have helped prepare me to guide families and support them. I want to make sure that families get the help they need and deserve, so they can focus on loving each other and recovering from the Olympic challenge of pregnancy and childbirth!
